Late in the afternoon, Zamora was driving through Socorro while pursuing a speeding black Chevrolet. During the chase he heard a sudden, exceptionally loud roar from the south-west. One additional observation became important during later investigation. Zamora reported a red marking on the side of the object, resembling a geometric emblem rather than ordinary lettering. The encounter changed dramatically only seconds later.
Without warning, Zamora heard the loud roar again. Looking towards the object, he saw a bright flame emerging beneath it. He described the flame as predominantly light blue with orange colouring near its lower portion.

Unlike many later UFO accounts involving silent hovering, Zamora consistently described the initial lift-off as noisy and apparently powered. The flame disturbed dust and loose material beneath the object, yet he specifically noted an absence of dense smoke. The silent departure
After rising only a short distance above the ground, the character of the event appeared to change.
According to Zamora, the loud roar ceased completely. The visible flame disappeared, yet the object continued moving smoothly at low altitude.
He watched it travel south-west, passing beyond a nearby dynamite shack before gradually climbing away over higher ground.
This final phase is important because Zamora distinguished clearly between powered lift-off and later flight:

One notable feature of the testimony is that Zamora’s description evolved naturally with distance and viewing angle rather than remaining fixed.
Initially he believed he had found an overturned vehicle. As he approached, the shape resolved into a smooth oval object. During departure he compared its distant appearance to a balloon, a comparison that referred to its silhouette rather than its identity.
