Introduction

The 2013 Puerto Rico infrared video from Aguadilla is a useful example of a broader problem in interpreting thermal imagery: an infrared recording can be authentic while the apparent behaviour of the object in the image is misleading. The unusual features that made the case famous — apparent high speed, separation into two objects, and a possible entry into the ocean — depend heavily on how a moving infrared sensor viewed a distant scene.[uapufo.org]uapufo.orgaaro puerto rico objectPuerto Rico Objects | Official UAP Video | UAP UFOApril 26, 2013…Published: April 26, 2013

Infrared cameras do not record “objects” in the same way that a normal camera does. They measure patterns of infrared radiation influenced by temperature, material properties, distance, atmospheric conditions and viewing angle. In the Aguadilla case, the central technical dispute is whether the video shows an object performing unusual manoeuvres or whether sensor geometry created an unusual appearance. The U.S. Department of Defense’s All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) concluded that viewing geometry and reconstruction of the flight path explained the apparent anomalies, while earlier independent analyses argued that the imagery remained inconsistent with ordinary explanations.[AARO]aaro.milUAP ImageryAARO UAP Imagery…

How infrared cameras capture objects

A thermal infrared sensor does not see shape and colour directly. Instead, it detects infrared radiation emitted or reflected by surfaces. Forward-looking infrared (FLIR) systems commonly operate in mid-wave or long-wave infrared bands, where the signal depends on the thermal properties of the target and the surrounding environment.[ScienceDirect]sciencedirect.comScienceDirect Forward-Looking InfraredForward-Looking Infrared - an overview | ScienceDirect Topics…

This difference matters because a bright mark on an infrared display is not automatically a complete picture of an object’s size, distance or physical structure. A small warm source close to the sensor can look similar to a larger object farther away. Edges may appear blurred, details can disappear, and tracking systems can lose information because thermal images often have lower contrast and fewer distinctive features than visible-light imagery.[PubMed Central (PMC)]pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.govPubMed Central (PMC)Trends in Correlation-Based Pattern Recognition and Tracking in Forward-Looking Infrared Imagery - PMCJuly 24, 2014…Published: July 24, 2014

For the Aguadilla recording, this limitation is important because the video does not provide a direct measurement of the object’s distance. Without reliable range information, apparent movement across the screen cannot by itself establish true speed or acceleration. A distant object viewed from a changing aircraft position can appear to move dramatically even if the object itself is moving slowly.

Thermal contrast can create false appearances

Infrared visibility depends on contrast between an object and its background. A hot object against a colder background may stand out clearly, while the same object may become difficult to distinguish when the surrounding scene has a similar infrared signature. This phenomenon, often called thermal crossover, can reduce target visibility when temperatures and emitted radiation become similar.[PubMed Central (PMC)]pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.govPubMed Central (PMC)Target Detection over the Diurnal Cycle Using a Multispectral Infrared Sensor - PMCDecember 29, 2016…Published: December 29, 2016

AARO’s analysis of the Puerto Rico video specifically argued that the apparent disappearance over the ocean was not evidence that an object entered the water. Instead, it concluded that the objects’ infrared signatures became indistinguishable from the background as the sensor view changed.[AARO]aaro.milPuerto Rico UAP Case ResolutionAARO Puerto Rico UAP Case Resolution…

This illustrates a key point in thermal analysis: disappearance in infrared footage does not necessarily mean physical disappearance. It may represent a loss of contrast, a change in viewing conditions, or a limitation of the sensor.

Perspective and motion effects in the Aguadilla footage

The most important illusion mechanism in the Puerto Rico case is perspective. A camera mounted on a moving aircraft does not observe the world from a fixed viewpoint. As the aircraft changes position, objects at different distances appear to move relative to the background at different rates.

This effect, known as motion parallax, is familiar from everyday experience: nearby objects appear to move rapidly past a vehicle window while distant mountains appear almost stationary. In airborne infrared footage, the same principle can make a slow-moving or stationary object appear to move quickly if the sensor platform is moving and the viewing angle is changing.

AARO’s reconstruction of the Aguadilla event used the aircraft’s movement, sensor line of sight and estimated object path to argue that the objects were not accelerating or travelling into the ocean. Instead, the reconstruction concluded that two objects were travelling together in a straight line at approximately wind speed.[AARO]aaro.milUAP ImageryAARO UAP Imagery…

The apparent “split” was another example of how perspective can influence interpretation. A single bright thermal shape can represent multiple nearby heat sources that are unresolved at one distance or angle. As the viewing conditions change, separate sources can become visually distinct, creating the impression that one object divided into two. AARO assessed that the footage showed two objects travelling near each other rather than one object separating.[uapufo.org]uapufo.orgaaro puerto rico objectPuerto Rico Objects | Official UAP Video | UAP UFOApril 26, 2013…Published: April 26, 2013

Why speed estimates from infrared video can be unreliable

Estimating speed from a thermal video requires more than measuring how fast an image moves across the screen. Investigators need information such as:

  • the sensor’s position and orientation;
  • the object’s distance from the aircraft;
  • the aircraft’s own speed and manoeuvres;
  • atmospheric conditions;
  • whether the object is moving independently or drifting with wind.

Without these measurements, a video can show apparent motion without revealing actual velocity.

This was a major point in the Aguadilla debate. The original interpretation of the footage focused on the apparent rapid movement across the image, while AARO’s later assessment argued that the motion was largely a product of the changing geometry between the aircraft, sensor and objects.[AARO]aaro.milUAP ImageryAARO UAP Imagery…

Why infrared footage can appear more convincing than it is

Thermal imagery often carries an impression of authority because it is associated with military aircraft and specialised equipment. In the Aguadilla case, the fact that the recording came from a U.S. Customs and Border Protection aircraft contributed to the perception that the video represented high-quality evidence. However, a professional sensor does not eliminate the need for careful interpretation.

A military-grade infrared system can accurately record what reaches the detector while still leaving important questions unanswered: How far away was the object? What was its true size? Was the apparent movement caused by the object or the observing platform? What environmental factors changed during the recording?

These questions are particularly important for small objects. AARO’s report estimated the objects in the Puerto Rico footage were smaller than one metre using pixel analysis, while also noting that the poor image quality limited certainty in identifying them.[AARO]aaro.milPuerto Rico UAP Case ResolutionAARO Puerto Rico UAP Case Resolution…

The lesson is not that infrared imagery is unreliable. Thermal sensors are widely used precisely because they provide valuable information in conditions where visible cameras struggle. The lesson is that infrared evidence must be interpreted alongside geometry, calibration data and independent measurements.

Lessons for future UAP analysis

The Aguadilla case demonstrates why unusual infrared footage requires a multi-layered approach. The most important question is not simply “what does the object look like?” but “what information does the sensor actually provide?”

Future analysis of UAP or other aerial observations benefits from:

  • Accurate range measurements: Distance is essential for calculating speed, size and manoeuvrability.
  • Sensor metadata: Information about the camera system, field of view and tracking mode can reveal possible distortions.
  • Platform reconstruction: The movement of the aircraft carrying the sensor must be separated from the movement of the observed object.
  • Multiple sensor sources: Radar, visible imagery, infrared data and environmental records can reduce ambiguity.

The Puerto Rico infrared video remains significant because it shows how quickly a convincing visual impression can form from limited information. The recording captured a real event with a real sensor, but the meaning of the image depended on understanding the physics behind the sensor itself.[AARO]aaro.milUAP ImageryAARO UAP Imagery…

For UAP investigations, the lasting value of the case is therefore methodological: unusual-looking infrared footage is not just a question of identifying objects, but of understanding how cameras, aircraft motion and human perception interact to create what appears on screen.
