Introduction
The Roswell story is often presented as a conflict between official explanations and eyewitness testimony. A closer examination shows a more complicated picture. The most reliable evidence comes from statements made in 1947, when memories were fresh and before Roswell became a cultural phenomenon. Those contemporary accounts consistently describe lightweight debris such as foil, rubber, paper and wooden sticks. When photographed with recovered debris in Fort Worth, Marcel described it to reporters as parts of a weather device consisting largely of foil and broken wooden members. Memory, corroboration and missing records
