Introduction

The best-known episode occurred on 17 March 1950, when reports spread through Farmington during the late morning. Contemporary newspaper accounts described residents stopping in streets, looking upward and contacting the Farmington Daily Times to report unusual objects. Among the frequently cited witnesses was Clayton J. Boddy, business manager of the Farmington Daily Times and a former Army engineer officer. According to contemporary reporting, Boddy described seeing several moving objects that were followed by what appeared to be a much larger group. Harold F. Thatcher, head of the local Soil Conservation Service office, provided one of the more technical eyewitness accounts. He attempted a rough triangulation estimate, using his understanding of measurements and perspective, and concluded that the object would have appeared to be travelling at an extremely high speed if it had been a conventional aircraft. His account is significant because it shows an effort by a witness to apply a measurement method rather than relying only on impression. Edward Brooks, a former B-29 tail gunner, was another often-mentioned witness. He stated that the objects’ movements did not resemble aircraft behaviour as he understood it from his wartime experience.
