The most widely circulated physical claim came from statements attributed to Genrikh Silanov, head of the Voronezh Geophysical Laboratory. The report also stated that investigators used a technique called “biolocation” to identify the landing area and trace the route supposedly taken by the visitors. For supporters of the case, the marks were significant because they appeared to provide a physical element independent of witness accounts. A landing trace, if properly documented and shown to have no ordinary explanation, would have been much stronger evidence than descriptions of unusual beings or a glowing object. The second major physical claim involved two pieces of reddish rock reportedly recovered from the area. That interpretation did not survive further scrutiny. The episode became a defining example of how a physical sample can be transformed by reporting. A statement that a substance was “unidentified” or required further analysis was interpreted by some audiences as meaning “extraterrestrial”, even though those are very different scientific claims.

Later assessments of the evidence
The later view of the physical evidence is more limited than the original headlines suggested. The landing marks remain part of the historical record of the Voronezh investigation, but they have not produced a widely accepted scientific conclusion that an unknown craft landed at the site.
