Introduction
The USS Russell video (2019) is best understood as a case where the authenticity of the recording and the interpretation of what appears in the recording are two separate questions. The footage is genuine Navy-recorded material: the Pentagon confirmed that the referenced images and videos were taken by Navy personnel and were part of Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Task Force review. The central evidence dispute concerns the “pyramid” appearance. The video does show bright triangular forms in a night-vision recording from the USS Russell, but the apparent geometry may be produced by the way the optical system renders distant points of light. The leading conventional interpretation is that the shapes are a sensor artefact: an out-of-focus light source transformed by the camera’s aperture into a triangular or polygonal blur rather than a direct image of a triangular object.

The USS Russell clip is not a conventional daylight camera recording. It was captured using a night-vision system, a type of sensor designed to amplify available light in dark conditions. Such systems are valuable for military observation, but they do not produce a simple visual equivalent of what a human eye would see. The recorded image depends on factors including focus, lens design, exposure settings, sensor processing and the brightness of the source being recorded.
This matters because the video contains mainly points of light rather than clearly resolved surfaces. A distant aircraft, drone light or other illumination source may appear as a glowing shape when the sensor cannot resolve the physical object itself. In other words, the camera may record the appearance of light passing through the optical system rather than providing a detailed outline of the object producing that light.

The Pentagon’s confirmation therefore supports the provenance of the footage but leaves open the question of what the sensor actually captured. Why the pyramid shapes appear in the video
The aperture and bokeh explanation
The most discussed explanation for the triangular appearance is an optical effect known as bokeh. Bokeh describes the appearance of blurred points of light when they are outside a camera’s focus. If the shape of the lens aperture is not circular, the out-of-focus light can take on that same shape.
For the USS Russell footage, analysts have argued that the triangular forms are consistent with a camera aperture effect. A bright point source, such as an aircraft navigation light or another distant illumination source, can become a triangular patch when recorded through a lens system with a matching aperture shape. This explanation does not claim that the video itself is fake; instead, it argues that the camera may be faithfully recording an optical distortion.

The distinction is important. The triangle visible on screen may describe the shape of the light image created inside the camera rather than the physical shape of the object in the sky. A distant object with ordinary dimensions can therefore appear as a large geometric form if the recording conditions prevent the sensor from resolving its structure.
Why the effect is persuasive to viewers
The pyramid interpretation became compelling because the shapes appear organised and solid. Human perception naturally interprets sharp geometric patterns as physical objects, especially when they appear against a dark background and seem to move. However, night-vision imagery often removes contextual clues such as texture, scale and distance, making it difficult to distinguish a glowing object from a distorted light source.
The video provides strong evidence that unusual-looking lights were recorded from a Navy vessel. It provides much weaker evidence about the actual physical shape of whatever produced those lights. The gap between those two conclusions is where much of the debate has centred.

Limits of interpreting sensor imagery
Sensor footage is most reliable when combined with additional information: calibrated measurements, multiple viewing angles, radar data, range estimates or detailed metadata. A short clip showing a bright object without scale information can support several competing explanations.
In the USS Russell case, the available public footage does not clearly reveal distance, size or structure. A viewer cannot easily determine whether the lights represent a nearby solid object, a distant aircraft, a drone, atmospheric effects or an interaction between light sources and the camera optics. This limitation does not make the footage meaningless; it defines what conclusions can reasonably be drawn from it.
The wider 2019 Navy encounters also influenced interpretation.
