The first major sighting of the Belgian wave occurred near Eupen in eastern Belgium on the night of 29 November 1989. Two gendarmes on patrol reported seeing a large triangular object moving slowly at low altitude. According to accounts collected by the Belgian Society for the Study of Space Phenomena (SOBEPS), the gendarmes described a dark triangular structure with lights positioned around its edges and a central red light. They reported that the object appeared to move silently and slowly, and they contacted local authorities while the observation was taking place. The importance of the Eupen event was not only the status of the first witnesses, but the number of later reports connected to that night. Shared descriptions across Belgium
One reason the Belgian wave attracted lasting attention was the repeated appearance of similar details in independent accounts. Many witnesses described:
- a large triangular or boomerang-like shape;
- three bright white lights arranged near the corners;
- a red light near the centre or underside;
- slow movement or apparent hovering;

The role of police sightings in public confidence
Police involvement changed how the Belgian wave was perceived.
