Why AARO left the object unidentified

AARO’s conclusion was shaped by the difference between proving what something is and proving what it is not. Why missing information matters

For analysts, missing information can create several competing possibilities. A small object viewed without reliable distance data may appear to move in unusual ways because of perspective effects. A sensor image without full telemetry may not reveal whether apparent motion comes from the object itself, the observing platform, or changes in camera angle. Without additional measurements, investigators may be unable to distinguish between a conventional object viewed under unusual conditions and something genuinely unusual.

AARO’s wider investigative record reflects this challenge. The office has argued that improving reporting standards, sensor collection, and access to relevant data are essential for reducing the number of unresolved cases.
